Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi has been given a release date and will be launched on February 25, 2022, after a long delay.
The film was supposed to be released in July of last year, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Alia Bhatt plays Gangubai, one of the most powerful, influential, loved, and revered madams in Mumbai’s red-light district during the 1960s. The film will be screened at the popular 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, where it will get its much-anticipated worldwide release.
The filmmakers took to their official social media handle and confirmed the news of the new release date of this movie.
Gangubai Kathiawadi is Alia Bhatt’s first collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Ajay Devgn plays a mafia boss who falls in love with Gangubai while teaching her the ropes of the trade. Gangubai appears in the crime thriller as a prostitute worker who later becomes a mafia don in Mumbai. For the uninitiated, Gangubai’s plot was taken from one of Hussain Zaidi’s ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ parts.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali has previously stated in an interview, that the picture is incredibly important to him and that it has not been easy. The whole crew made it through the pandemic, and he gave it everything he had. He can’t wait to share it with everyone.
On the work front, Alia Bhatt had made her appearance in Karan Johar’s teenage drama Student of the Year. In 1999 thriller Sangharsh (2012). She went on to star in a number of films produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, including the romantic comedies 2 States (2014), Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), and Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017), Dear Zindagi (2016). Alia Bhatt received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress in the movie Highway (2014), as well as three other Best Actress nominations for her roles as a Bihari migrant in the crime drama Udta Punjab (2016), an undercover spy in the thriller Raazi (2018).
