After founding a production firm called Excel Entertainment with Ritesh Sidhwani ,Akhtar decided to make his directorial breakthrough with Dil Chahta Hai . The movie received the National Award for Best Hindi Movie and was praised for its portrayal of contemporary youth. Following this, he co-wrote the lyrics for Bride and Prejudice with his sister Zoya Akhtar, helmed the cult hit war movie Lakshya, and made his Hollywood debut. After directing the financially viable Don ,his third picture as a director, he went on to direct the HIV/AIDS awareness short film Positive. He also wrote the dialogues and produced for the critically acclaimed and financially successful Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), which earned him the Best Supporting Actor award; the same year, he directed a sequel to Don.
