Movie Plot and Review: Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui” is said to be a casual expression of a serious subject. The movie then approaches the character and plots it that way. The man in question is the owner of a gym named Manvinder Munjal, also known as Manu (Ayushmann Khurana). There are enough quirky people around Manu-like his greatest cheerleaders, his twin acolytes Riz and Jomo, and his widow’s father who finally found love again at the age of 55.

Meanwhile, Manu’s two sisters play the role of mother in his life (obviously in the plural). One sunny day, a Zumba instructor enters his life. Charms interact instantly. Sparks fly and songs play. Now we are coming to the “hitch”.

Manu is a Punjabi Munda, so far his   focus of life has been the unfulfilled pursuit of winning the local competition for the strong and bulky Gabru.

It is a huge leap for a man like him to discover this aspect of Manvi’s life. And there is a conflict there. Overlooking the details of the conflict, the rest of the movie follows the path expected of most Bollywood love stories. Fortunately, the simplicity of the movie cannot prevent the potential impact it has.

And obviously, the love story of a transgender woman and desi Johnny Bravo is a delicious idea and can be explored in different ways. This will be another movie, For example, if a transgender actor was hired for that role, or if the focus was on Manvi’s transformation rather than on a romantic perspective.

More importantly, the film struggled (and still) to make room for what Manvi experienced, for herself, where she is. We spend a lot of time making us feel that we are. Indeed, the upper middle class Mambi has socio-economic privileges that many others in our country do not have. But expecting discourse about the crossing of films that has already exceeded certain limits demands too much. Whatever it digs into, it presents with nuances which we haven’t expected.

Movie “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui” is worth watching, as it illuminates a burning topic in a useful and interesting way.
