On Tuesday morning, a large audience assembled at the residence of Punjabi singer and Congress activist Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, 28, better known by his stage name Sidhu Moose Wala, to pay their homage to him. On Sunday evening, the young rapper was shot and killed not far from his house. His death was widely grieved in India and Canada, where he had resided as a student in Ontario.
Moose Wala’s body was returned to his family on Tuesday morning, surrounded by strong security. A massive group assembled outside his ancient homeland as police sealed the doors, allowing only family members and close friends inside.The family has opted to execute final rites on their traditional agricultural land in Moosa village, Mansa district. Supporters were seen yelling anti-state government slogans.
The assassination of the Congress leader has sparked a political uproar in the state, with calls for the Bhagwant Mann government to be dismissed. He was attacked only a day after his protection was reduced.Following widespread criticism, Punjab’s former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh ordered a reconsideration of his decision to reduce his protection. Hundreds of people were harmed by the state government’s action against “VIP culture.”
His family had already refused to allow the body to be post-mortemed after Punjab police said it was a matter of inter-gang rivalry. Punjab DGP VK Bhawra later explained that he held the singer-politician in the highest regard. He also stated that he had never referred to the 28-year-old as a gangster.According to an autopsy report, the popular singer’s body had a total of 25 entry and exit bullet holes.
