Indian stand-up comedian Vir Das has once again brought honor to the nation by clinching the Emmy Awards 2023 in the unique comedy special category. The 44-year-old comedian’s nomination for “Veer Das: Landing,” available on Netflix, culminated in a shared victory with ‘Derry Girls – Season 3’ at the prestigious event held in New York City.
This year’s International Emmy Awards 2023 witnessed a remarkable presence of Indian talent on the global stage. Two Indian series secured nominations, with actress Shefali Shah’s “Delhi Crime Season 2” and Vir Das’s comedy special “Veer Das: Landing” in contention. Unfortunately, Shah didn’t secure the Best Actor award, which went to Mexican actor Karla Souza for her outstanding performance in the series “La Caida.”
In his Netflix special, “Veer Das: Landing,” Vir Das skillfully explored the intersection between Indian and American cultures, providing a humorous perspective framed within the realm of politics.
Reflecting on his nomination earlier, Vir Das expressed his belief in the need for a global comedy voice beyond India. “Comedy has emerged as a separate genre, and in such a situation, it will be a significant step to promote and advance the comedic art form,” remarked Vir Das.
The International Emmy Awards showcased the diversity of global talent, with 56 candidates from over 20 countries vying for recognition. The nominations from India included not only Vir Das but also fellow nominees Shefali Shah and Jim Sarbh for “Delhi Crime Season 2” and “Rocket Boys,” respectively. While Shah faced stiff competition and lost to Karla Souza, Jim Sarbh fell short against Martin Freeman for “The Responder.”
Vir Das’s triumph serves as a testament to the expanding reach and impact of the International Emmy Awards, solidifying the comedian’s position as a prominent figure in the global comedy landscape.
