Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has exited NBC medical drama New Amsterdam. The actor played the role of Dr. Vijay Kapoor in the series and had appeared as a regular ever since its debut in 2018. The news was confirmed by Deadline.

David Schulner’s NBC medical drama New Amsterdam will now be short of one doctor as veteran actor Anupam Kher will be exiting from the show. In Tuesday night’s episode it was revealed that Dr Vijay Kapoor has resigned from his duties at Bellevue Hospital. Dr Vijay Kapoor’s resignation in the show came after a harrowing COVID-19 battle that involved open-heart surgery.
The third season of the medical drama was aired on 2nd March 2021. It showed that the staff at Bellevue Hospital was facing the covid-19 pandemic. Members of the hospital contracted the viral disease which included Anupam’s character. In addition to that, his character also underwent open-heart surgery followed by a difficult rehabilitation process. In Tuesday’s episode the hospital staff learns that Dr. Kapoor left his job as his rehabilitation process left him unable to resume his responsibilities.
Distractify informed that Dr Kapoor’s colleague Iggy in the show, was furious after Kapoor’s resignation. Though he was seen leaving angry messages on Dr. Kapoor’s voicemail but eventually he is seen giving a decent goodbye to him. Later in the episode, Dr. Kapoor’s daughter-in-law Ella tells that doctors told Kapoor during his rehabilitation that the stress of being a doctor would be too much on his body.
Kher’s character, Dr. Kapoor was last seen in Season 3.
Anupam’s exit comes days after his wife actress Kirron Kher was diagnosed with a type of Blood Cancer. Anupam told Hindustan Times that Kirron was currently undergoing treatment and they were sure she will come out of it stronger than before.
New Amsterdam is a medical drama which is inspired by a memoir Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital written by Dr. Eric Manheimer. While Anupam essays the role of Dr. Kapoor, Ryan Eggold plays the role of Dr. Goodwin. Apart from them, the show features Freema Agyeman as Dr. Sharpe, Janet Montgomery as Dr. Bloom, and Jocko Sims as Dr. Reynolds.
