The comparision between South and Bollywood industry is always on the league and recently Anurag Kashyap had took a stance on the same. The filmmaker responded that there are no missing Hindi films and that films from the South also fail to lure viewers to theatres when asked about this during a recent promotional event. The interviewer was then asked if he could name any recent Telugu, Tamil, or Kannada movies.
Why do you think southern films are successful? Two films in Hindi and Telugu and one each in Kannada and Tamil were successful. The same cannot be said about Tamil and Kannada films, which have been released more recently. That’s because movies also don’t function there. People not having enough money is the main issue. GST is paid on paneer. Your food is subject to GST. The demands to boycott, boycott Bollywood, boycott this and that, and other trends serve as a diversion from the underlying issue, and people are more willing to spend their money on a movie if they are confident that everyone will enjoy it. Or, if audiences had been anticipating the film for years. People have been anticipating SS Rajamouli’s film since Baahubali, for instance. In addition, KGF 2 was eagerly anticipated following the success of KGF.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was also a sequel, and audiences were anticipating it, Anurag continued. Now, because of the positive word-of-mouth, people went to see Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Gangubai Kathiawadi. There isn’t a lot of money in people’s pockets. We should be discussing the perilous economic downturn in our nation, but we prefer to speak about Bollywood or cricket instead. Well this statement of Anurag had obviously caught attention and had point.
Dobaaraa, a Hindi version of the 2018 Spanish film Mirage, directed by Anurag Kashyap, is scheduled for release on August 19.
